Have you ever asked yourself what makes me worthy of unconditional love? I just did as I sat down for my meditation while taking a minute to drink in my very familiar surroundings. I have my English Lab, Bingo, napping a few feet away, and my Yorkie, Lola, cuddled up in my lap as I sit on my bolster surrounded by candles and incense.
I smile at the joy that my furry friends bring to my life every day. And the thought pops into my head; Lola, Lucy, (my other dog who prefers the couch over everything these days), and Bingo, love me unconditionally. Then I ask myself, what have I done to deserve this love? The truth is, I did not have to do anything in their eyes. All I have ever been with them is myself.
They see every part of me, especially the parts that I hide from the outside world for fear of being judged and not accepted. They even see the parts of me that I sometimes wish to hide from myself. They witness my laughter, my tears, my terrible dance moves, and the tone-deaf song lyrics I serenade them with whether they want to hear it or not. They get me completely distracted on my stupid phone, fully engulfed in work, and sometimes flat-out overwhelmed with life. They also get me fully engaged in belly scratches, games of fetch, and many conversations as I shower them with, "good girls" and "good boys". They get me frustrated and tired and they get me energetic and excited. They get, quite literally, all of me. And out of all the people on this planet, I bet no one loves me more than my dogs.
They are proof that this unconditional love not only exists but is in abundance surrounding me. Whether I believe I deserve it or not, Lola, Lucy, and Bingo are living proof that I am worthy of unconditional love. They take me in my messy and my beautiful, never holding any of it against me. Always excited to greet me and forever protect me.
So this is your invitation to find your proof. To open your awareness to where in your life you are surrounded by unconditional love. Maybe you don't have a dog today, maybe you have a cat or a small child, or maybe you walk outside and find its presence in nature. But anytime you forget your worth or your inner critic is too loud, run this idea through your head and welcome gratitude and worthiness. Sometimes we have to be reminded that we don't have all the answers. After all, we do not share a language with animals but somehow they understand us, explain that one.
So to answer the question, what makes me worthy of unconditional love, being you makes you worthy. You do not have to do anything and you are already worthy just as you are.
That the love we seek created us and therefore lives within us. We already are what we are looking for. You can find evidence of worthiness and love all around you, all you have to do is choose to open your heart and receive.
